05. Symbols and Icons

In the basic sense an icon is a symbol. On your computer the icons are simplified representations of more complex images or things. These are the amoeba of symbols. Any object or graphic design (including words) that stands for or suggests something else is a symbol – and sometimes what the symbol stands for is an abstract idea.
